Turnberry, Ayrshire

Photography is all about the light and the quality of that light. Light is the magical ingredient. Recently, at Turnberry, on the Ayrshire coast in the west of Scotland, this truth was evident - and thankfully, the quality of the light was truly magical.

On an overcast afternoon and evening, the skies were magnificent, with wonderful clouds and astonishing light flooding through them and between them, giving a singular sky and leaving me filled with sheer awe.

Turnberry is perhaps best known for its golf course and the world-famous Open which takes place every year. But there is much more to the place than just this. Running along the edge of the golf course is a series of cliff edges leading down to small sandy coves and larger bays. Looking out to see, the silhouette of Arran stands proudly on the horizon. Farther along, the majestic Ailsa Craig rock rises up out of the water, almost like the crown of Poseidon, guarding the seafarer.

One of the best feautures of the area is the Turnberry Lightouse and there are a variety of possible views of the it, from close-up within its' grounds, to a longer view from any of the surrounding cliffs. Against a moody sky, the white tower of the lighthouse can look very striking. It can also make a good subject in a broader view of the bays and cliffs.

As well as the obvious images to be captured - landscape and seascape - there are also opportunities for abstracts, particualrly with some of the driftwood washed up on the sandy beaches; and for architecture and detail shots, with some of the buildings such as the lighthouse and the hotel, and also the small 'Halfway House'. And in the right quality of light, Turnberry really is magical.
