Out and About - Summer 2009
It's been a busy couple of months. I seem to have got into the habit of going out on Saturdays - and often on Sundays, also - and travelling to all sorts of wonderful places. Sometimes alone and sometimes in company.
Recent expeditions included a day out with the camera club on the Isle of May, famed for its bird colonies, but also boasting some incredible seascapes and also the oldest lighthouse in Scotland - and one of three on the island. They proved to be very photogenic and one of the shots from that day now ranks among my all-time favourite photographs.
Another recent day out was spent in Dumfries and Galloway, where a friend and I visited several sites, including a hidden bay and Scotland's only triangular castle, which was stunning in the early morning light, which was amazingly pure and clear. Perhaps the best shots of that day were of an old boat called the Alison Louise, rusting quietly in its mooring on the River Nith; she turned out to be a good subject both for colour and for monochrome shots.
Very recently, I took a trip to Ayrshire, a very beautiful part of the country and one I enjoy visiting as often as I can. Having visited Culzean Castle on numerous occasions in the past, I decided to return and to try to capture something new amongst all the very familiar subjects there. I came home with a handful of shots which I really like; a couple which build on similar attempts from the past, but captured now with (hopefully) improved technique, and also a couple which record familiar sights seen with new eyes.
On the same trip, I also discovered a very large and derelict castle, which will be the subject of a return visit in the near future; and some seascape shots which I quite like.
As well as landscape and seascape shots, other subjects over the last few months have included a new bridge over the River Clyde in Glasgow, now affectionately referred to as the 'Squiggly Bridge' - and not to be confused with its near neighbour, the 'Squinty Bridge'.
I spent a day travelling through the East Neuk of Fife, visiting various small harbours and fishing ports - my favourite amongst them being the wonderfully named Ruby Bay. Most recently I visited the majestic Bamburgh Castle and watched the harvest moon rise up out of the sea.
The weather has been exceptionally kind and it's been a pleasure to go out with the camera - but while it has been very warm and sunny, there have also been the most astonishing cloud formations (which never fail to fascinate me) and I hope I have done them justice in recording some of them.
